July Sum Up

Published by katarzyna_radzka at 4:02 am under Writing Life Edit This

I’ve managed to land another short assignment. I’m very excited about it and it’s all thanks to following up. I sent the original query at the beginning of June and had received no reply. At the beginning of this week, I sent the editor a quick follow up and two days later she replied with a positive response to one of my proposed ideas. I sent her three.

Now I have two articles due in September for two different magazines. One on line and one print. Slowly, things are starting to happen. So I’m off to do some research for these two, and come up with more article ideas to propose to editors.

July Sum Up

  • 25 queries sent this month, a fair bit shy of my goal but it has shown results. Procrastination has prevented me from achieving my original goal. I’m still pleased that I sent out 25 though.

  • I’ve got 2 assignments so far, one maybe, and a few more editors to get back to me. I’ll be following up with any queries that haven’t been responded to at the end of August. Any queries that have been rejected will be aimed towards another magazine.

  • Kept up regular posts with both my blogs. This month I raised a few eyebrows and got some angry comments for both. I hope that I have supported my point adequately. There’s still so much to learn about writing, journalism and the entire game that it’s going to take time. I know that there are going to be mistakes along the way. The important thing is to learn from them.

  • I’ve put in a lot of attention to Helium. I’m learning to write fast, and I get to write about topics that interest me. I’ve written loads of articles about health and fitness and personal finance for this site and have been rewarded financially. Passive income is at about $10 per month, but I’m also earning per article I submit. I’ve averaged about 60 in a month, though I’m hoping to double this in August for financial reasons.

  • I’ve been asked to join the steward program on Helium. Something different that I hadn’t even considered, but I’m happy to give it a go. I’m open to new experiences when it comes to writing, editing and revising.

  • Unfortunately, I still haven’t been paid for an article I wrote in April. Payment was due in June, and I am still following up. I have high hopes that the overdue amount is going to hit my bank account within days. If not, I’ll be calling the editor again.

  • I’ve been contemplating what to do my Master’s degree. I’m battling between a Master of Arts in Writing/ Masters in Communication/ or do a second bachelor degree, Bachelor of Behavioural Studies. It’s a tough choice. I’m not sure what’s going to give me the biggest benefit.

  • I’ve managed to keep up a regular exercise program at least 3-4 times per week. It’s a combination of weights, running, cycling, kayaking and Pilates.

  • Unfortunately I’ve slacked off with my novel writing. I’m still editing and changing lots of scenes. Each time I look at it there seems to be so much more work I need to do.

One busy person - glad all seems to be going well for you. I started off with helium, then joined a forum and got involved in NaNoWriMo - which I completed. Never thought I would be able to write this much in a month, but I did it.

Don’t give up with the novel - it’ll come

    all the best

Congratulations on your results with NaNoWriMo. Setting the goal of writing all month and doing it is a huge success.

NaNoWriMo is fantastic, I tried it last year and was definitely pleased with my results. I didn’t actually put my name down or anything but made the personal goal to write as much as possible in the month of November. It was fun and I hope to do it again.

After taking a holiday and a short break, the novel is once again starting to take shape.

    Thank you :)
