What Markets Are Out There?
Markets are everywhere, regardless of the fact that times are hard and editors may be using staff writers instead of freelancers, many writers are continuing to make a decent income.
Magazines
Consumer, trade, and literary. Certain magazines pay more than others but if you’re starting out there’s no point to be picky. Sure it would be nice to start with $500 a piece articles in national magazines, and some beginner writers have managed it, but there’s nothing wrong in targeting the smaller ones that pay $50 per article.
Online
Nowadays there are many online publications that require writers. They too need informative articles on many topics ranging from health and fitness, travel, parenting, finance and much more. You can find them using the search engines. A writer writes, it doesn’t matter whether it’s online or print, both forms of media require professional and talented writers. Don’t let anyone tell you that just because you’re not published in numerous national publications you’re not a worthy writer. You are.
Blogs
If you have experience on a topic like health, parenting, education or something else, you might be able to get a job as a regular blogger. You might have to write a blog entry once a day or a couple of times per week. The money can range from $5 per blog entry upwards.
Others
Sites like Suite101.com, Helium.com, eHow and many others offer writers the chance to make a bit of extra cash and get their writing out there. Many writers don’t like these programs and don’t believe that in order to earn an income writers need to try them. The pay really is small, however, if you need a bit of extra income to get you going while you’re starting out your freelance writing career, you might be able to find some luck in supplementing a portion of your income. Some writers are lucky to earn a regular income from these sites. Check out www.freelancehomewriter.blogspot.com, Willow Sidhe offers some good advice on working for some of these sites, as well as providing details of her experiences with some of them.
How else can a writer make money?
Write for newspapers. They need lots of material on a daily basis. Not everything is the latest news. Check out their feature sections about lifestyle, travel, health, education and many others.
Greeting cards. Someone has got to write those amusing snippets, that person could be you in the future. Use a search engine to find suitable ones. You can get paid as much as $150 for a four line verse.
Resume services, marketing and advertising material, are also ways freelancers can make extra money and survive in this career full time.
