 Writing is one of those jobs, that well, won’t manage on it’s own merits. It’s not going to sell from your documents, it’s not going to find a readership if no one knows who you are. No one will find out about you if your writing is lying around at the bottom of the drawer or hidden in your lap top.

This was me for the past decade or so when I realised that writing was something I wanted to do for life. Over ten years spent writing, hiding, writing some more and discarding notebooks filled with stories, articles, poems and everything to do with the written word.

A year ago something lit up inside of me. I stumbled on a few websites that gave me the inspiration to try and follow my lifelong dream, and the only thing I have ever been certain about – wanting to be a writer. However I realised that it wasn’t going to be as easy as simply saying, ‘I’m going to be a freelance writer.’

If only.

I realised that I was going to have to remove the words - shy, frightened, inadequate – from my vocabulary and find new words to describe me – extroverted, brave, skilled. Yeah right, maybe at the same time I might learn to talk about myself to anyone willing to listen. Not likely but I could at least give it a go.

Without self promotion your writing career isn’t likely to remain in neutral but what you should be doing is trying out first gear and seeing where it gets you.

The moment I overcame my fear of self promotion, things started to finally happen, new ideas formed in my mind and I was no longer the closet writer, but a writer on her way to getting published and slowly starting to build a freelance writing career.
